Borno’s new SWAN chairman prioritises 3 areas in sports development

The chairman of the newly inaugurated Borno state executive council of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ibrahim Tukur, has listed three critical areas of sports development he would be focusing on during his tenure.

Mr Tukur who is best known as “Worker’ said though he intends to use his office and sporting activity to bring many developments to the state of Borno, he considers the revival of SWAN operations, youth engagement in sports and promotion of traditional sporting activity as his foremost priority.

The new SWAN chairman was on Saturday, March 28, 2021, inaugurated alongside five others by the zonal vice president Zakari Jibo at the NUJ State secretariat, Maiduguri.
The new officials are expected to bring onboard new impetus that will revive the culture of sports reporting in Borno state.

The Zonal Vice President of SWAN, Mr Zakari Jibo, who is of the Yobe state council urged the new officials to make the most of the opportunities given to them to promote sporting activities in the state.

He also urged journalists who have any interest in sports reporting to join SWAN by registering online to become full-fledged member.


Speaking in an interview with The Humanitarian Times, Mr Worker said he intends to achieve a lot for SWAN and sports development in the state.

“My major focus as the new state chairman of SWAN is to work together with my executives to unite SWAN and revive robust reporting of sports activities in Borno state,” he said.

He also said he would be “partnering with relevant stakeholders”, including the government, to see how youths can be positively engaged in sporting activities as a strategy for job creation and “taking their minds off vain activities and criminalities like joining radical groups.

“I seriously intend to see how we could together promote traditional sporting activities in Borno state, as another means of engaging the youth. Borno state has many traditional sports that we could promote and possibly make them competitive as well.
