Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo, is today in Maiduguri, Borno state, capital on an official working visit.
Mr Osinbajo, a professor of law, is in Maiduguri exactly two months after his principal, Muhammadu Buhari, had visited to commission projects done by the Borno state government.
The VP had visited Borno state for about four times now since he came to power as number two citizen in 2015.
Though officials of Borno state government had insisted that the visit of the VP had nothing to do with his future career in politics, his being hosted by a governorr that has been endorsed by many Nigerians as his perfect running mate puncture every denial.
As a matter of fact, banners and fliers held by citizens who stormed the streets of Maiduguri to hail the motorcade of the visitor bore the photos of VP Osinbajo and Governor Zulum with inscription urging them to be the next leaders come 2023.
Professor Osinbajo who landed the Maiduguri International Airport at about 11am came in the company of the Ministers of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Aisha Abubakar, Minister of state for Agriculture, Baba Shehuri who is from Borno, and some national assembly members also from Borno.
The VP was later led out of the airport by his host Professor after a brief perfunctory ceremony of welcome.
The vice president who was accompanied by other top officials of the presidency and former governor of Borno state, Senator Kashim Shettima visited an orphanage built by his officials about four years ago to meet with the pupils, most kids orphaned by Boko Haram.
Isa Gusau, Governor Zulum’s Special Adviser on Public Relations and Strategy, said “Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo was in Maiduguri to launch the 30th edition of the Federal Government’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Clinic during which he would commissioning four out of over 500 projects executed by the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum.”
The VP later commission a recently erected medical doctors quarters along the airport road in Maiduguri.
The Humanitarian Times was informed that the new doctors quarters comprise 78 units of three bedroom apartments from 13 blocks of two-storey buildings with each block having six apartments.
Osinbajo also commissioned a shopping complex of 72 shops that are meant to be distributed to small and medium businesses owners.
It what appears like a rally in a political campaign trail, the VP made a dramatic stop over at a crowded Maiduguri GSM Market where he briefly addressed the banner wielding youths by urging to keep on supporting government even as he assured them of President Buhari’s commitment “towards supporting and empowering them.”
The VP later moved to an orphanage school best known as the Northeast Children Learning Centre, which is a donor-funded primary to secondary school institution that was personally initiated by the Vice President in March 2017 when he marked his 60th birthday.
The center was set up to provide homes, education and entrepreneurship skills to 1,500 children orphaned by insurgency across the northeast.
The VP then moved on commission another mega-sizeze senior secondary school named after late Alhaji Mai Deribe, one of Borno’s foremost business personalities..
From the school, the VP was led to Gonidamgari community road which snakes through Abbaganaram, Railway terminus, Borno Aluminium, down to Borno flour mill junction in Maiduguri.
Before moving to the palace of the Shehu of Borno, where he paid homage to the royal majesty, Abubakar Garbai Elkanemi, the VP lauded the state governor whom he said had presented himself to Nigerians and the political class, as a perfect example of how leaders who could use little to achieve a lot.
He then finally went to the Government House Maiduguri where launch the 30th edition of Federal Government’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Clinic with more than 100 business owners to showcase their products and interact with federal officials involved with enhancing businesses for local consumption and export.
Though the visit was not political, as claimed by the government officials, banners on the streets of Maiduguri, especially along the strategic routes used by the visitor bore screaming inscriptions hailing the two professors as the new face of leaders that Nigeria needs.
Osinbajo had spoken glowingly about Governor Zulum, and how excited he was each time he visits Borno. He told the Shehu of Borno that Thursday’s visit would not be the last he would be visiting. He said “I will be back again.”
